Charles Kruger’s review of Honey Brown Eyes in the Bay Area Theatre Examiner is probably one of my favorite to date. He completely got what I was going for with the play. Many thanks to the San Francisco Playhouse for executing such fine work. Here’s my favorite part of his review:
“I, personally, found this painful yet fascinating to watch. You see, I have worked teaching incarcerated juvenile gang members and I recognized my students in his performance. I have taught young people guilty of brutal murders, rapes and home invasions whom I nevertheless knew as friendly, engaged teenaged boys. Like Dragan, they are simultaneously monsters and innocent kids. I have seen them struggle with these conflicting roles.
Watching this portrayal of a Bosnian soldier, I realized I was not watching something past and foreign: I was watching us, today, here and now. This was not a monster. This could be our own child. The playwright brings this home with surprising effect by the presence of a television on the table that plays American sitcoms. We cannot escape the truth that we are watching ourselves.”

I love the game of telephone that occurs when journalists choose to freely interpret rather than report. There is no making of toast or eating of sandwiches in my play, but that should not deter you from checking out the work of the wonderful people at San Francisco Playhouse! Hilarious!

I’m really excited to announce that The Electric Baby is headed to the 2011 PlayPenn Conference in Philadelphia this summer where director Daniella Topol and I will continue working on the play together.
I’ll be there from July 8-24, 2011 with these amazing writers: Lisa Dillman, Jacqueline Goldfinger, Brian Quirk, as well as John Yearly and Lauren Yee, who are probably surprised and delighted that they’re not listed last for once!
